Final class before the summer break is Tuesday 18th July
Classes restart Tuesday 12th September
Do you live in or near Shrewsbury? Are you interested in learning the fundamental stages of our breath based meditation practice?
The Shrewsbury Samatha meditation class resumes in September and meets each Tuesday in school term weeks at the Roy Fletcher Centre. Class opens at 7pm, starting at 7.15pm. Newcomers are welcome at any time of the year and no prior notice is needed, but aim to arrive for 7pm on your first visit for an individual introduction. People attend as and when they can, and there is opportunity each week for individual guidance with your meditation practice.
The teaching is given freely. To contribute towards room hire and refreshment costs, a donation box is provided.
It takes about 4 months to learn the fundamental stages of the practice, which help to develop a focussed awareness of the mind and create conditions for concentration based on calm and relaxation. No prior experience of meditation is necessary and no faith commitments are needed. This practice is based on Buddhist teachings but you do not need to become a Buddhist to benefit. Meditation is a practical matter and the skills learnt are applicable to everyday life.
Ongoing refinement of the practice can continue beyond these introductory stages and in addition to weekly classes the Samatha Association offers weekend and longer retreats at our national meditation centre in Wales, just a one hour drive from Shrewsbury.
