Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
At the Samatha Trust, we believe that the Buddha’s path to awakening is open to all. In the spirit of loving-kindness and compassion, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse and accessible Sangha (community) where every person feels accepted and valued.
Beginners' classes and introductory weekends are open to all, irrespective of religious belief, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, nationality, disability, neurodivergence or class.
Groups, classes and residential courses for more experienced Samatha meditators are open to everyone of whatever kind, who has attended introductory classes and learned all the stages of the Samatha breathing practice.
The samatha practice taught by the Samatha Trust has 16 stages and is learned over a period of about a year. Meditators continue to develop their skill further during 2 or 3 years of practice before joining a group for more experienced meditators. This means that an intermediate or more experienced group would not be suitable for a newcomer - they would need to learn all the stages of the practice and develop some experience with them first.
Inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility are among our core values. We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or exclusionary behaviour of any kind.
For further details and policy applying these principles in practice, download the Samatha Trust's Protecting People from Mistreatment, Bullying and Harassment Policy.
